Topic: Snow Leopard and security issues

The site  http://www.securemac.com/ , which is devoted to serious consideration of security issues (malware, etc.) affecting the Mac,  claims that the new security feature built into Snow Leopard by Apple, called XProtect, "is limited in scope and misses the vast majority of malware for Mac OS X".

Unless the individuals running this site are to be written off as paranoid, it seems that it is about time for the average Mac user to finally start taking the issue  of viruses, spyware, etc. seriously.

Re: Snow Leopard and security issues

I hope they're just paranoid but I can't dismiss them without knowing who they are. It's hard for me to believe Apple would be so sloppy they would miss major security issues.
I would like comments from people who know more about this than I do.

The individuals who set up this site are very clear about who they are. See http://www.securemac.com/who.php

Re: Snow Leopard and security issues

One thing to be aware of is that the vast majority of the programs that SecureMac lists are legitimate programs running as intended.   The KeyLogger apps are designed to watch what you type and recreate it if you lose your file.  LittleSnitch is designed to tell you when a program is accessing the internet, possible without your knowledge.  Several of them are used by employers to make sure employees are working and not goofing off on company time.  The RemoteAdmin programs are used to access your computer remotely.  ScreenSharing and BackToMyMac are also examples that are included in the OS.

The issue is that the bad guys are using the same types of programs that the good guys use.
Which makes it tricky for a regular user to know the difference.
